Sully barely finished high school--no way he's spending money he doesn't have on college classes he has no interest in. Instead, he's invented his own school, down in his basement, doing what he truly loves--studying sports gambling. That's what he's going to be when he grows up--a sports gambler. Except lately he's hit an unexpected cold streak losing more than he wins and owing Hungry Mike more than he can afford.
But Sully has a vision place one big two-team parlay. If he wins the bet, his debt is gone and he has enough money to move his mother and himself out of their apartment on the rough side of town. If he loses, he spends the next several years waiting tables sixty hours a week to pay it off--or worse.
SULLY THE GAMBLER is the story of good intentions and false aspirations set within the booming world of sports gambling, with a character you'll be rooting for on every page.

Solid read that was hard to put down. You could tell that the author wove in his own life experiences growing up in Dorchester. This made the story feel very realistic. It pulled no punches on addiction and didn't seek to glorify Sully's struggles. The importance of childhood friendships rang true. Definitely chuckled at some moments (everyone knows a Mrs. Gorski and the flatulence references remind you that the character is about 19 or 20 years old). Having spent some time in Dorchester myself through the years, the background and relationships described throughout were authentic. Just an overall tremendous job by the author Mr. Ruka. He should be proud.

Enjoyable, easy read that makes you want to squeeze in one more chapter before moving on with your day. I bet you'll like it.
I loved reading this book. Sully's story of his gambling had me on an emotional roller coaster. The book is an easy read and can get addicting towards the end. I'm in anticipation for a part two.
Best thing I've read in a very long time. James Ruka creates characters that embody the qualities of people we see everyday. The heart of his main character Sully, is both inspiring and supremely real. Great read!!
Great story with well developed colorful characters. Sully just grabs your heart-you want him to win so badly but at the same time you want to ring his neck! But it's his deep honesty & his desire to do the right thing that makes him such a memorable character. More exploits of Sully please !!!!!!!
"Sully" is a must read if you grew up any where near Boston. If you understood point spreads before puberty, this story will ring true.
I truly loved reading this book and was amazed at how much I was drawn into the characters' lives. I was impressed with how the author created so many dimensions to the main character, Sully. He was a devoted son, loyal friend and a man of his word. Yes, he made some really bad choices but I could not help rooting for him and hoping everything would turn out for him. Great read! I would highly recommend.
Sully the Gambler was an amazing story. I couldn't put it down. Sully's story of gambling addiction seems so much more real than just a fictional novel. Sully seems like he could be one of your very best friends, or even someone like you. Even though I have never been a huge sports fan, nor someone who gambles, I found my heart racing when the action was happening in all of the games that Sully had his bets placed on. I felt like my life was on the line if I didn't come up with the money in every situation that Sully was in. James Ruka knows how to write a captivating story that grabs readers immediately and keeps them on the edge of their seats through the duration of the story. Relatable, truthful, serious and definitely hilarious.
