A novel of the Vietnam War as told by a young American recruit about his tour of duty in the late 1960s. Real-life Vietnam War experiences through the eyes and ears of powerful, compelling characters. Gisclair takes a fresh-faced recruit and shapes him into a hardened soldier in the jungles of Nam. In honest and authentic descriptions that make our hearts ache till the last word, he presents the grunts and their comrades, including a unit standout, the Cajun Pierre Boudreaux whose French language and culture help him to bond with the villagers. Actual combat is overshadowed by psychological and physical challenges the soldiers face every moment of every day. Gisclair makes us care about these young GIs and grieve for those who don’t come back. Beautifully and poetically written, this is a winner for first-time author Gisclair.

I don't even know how to begin writing a review of "Singing to the Lions". It was more of an experience than a story. The main character, White, is introduced as he joins a platoon of veterans. The rest of the book is the continued development of the psyche of this average, innocent American boy into the total warrior and the price he must pay throughout that evolution. The driving force is not his desire to be a warrior but his survival and the survival of his friends who found him worthy and taught him what he must know to become what he was to become. The warrior spirit was passed to him as it had been passed to those before him and he is left to pass it to those coming after him. The whole story has a very personal quality and an aura of truth that only a writer who had been White could have told. What was revealed in the story was much too personal to have been fiction. I'm sure characters and events were modified and that there is fiction as necessary to create the story but the soul of the story, its essence, is very true. The only thing I found disappointing was that the book had to end.

I have read many books about Vietnam but before reading "Singing to the Lions" only three novels really stood out; "Matterhorn", "Fields of Fire" and "13th Valley" and this stands tall among these. I was shocked at the literary quality of what I assume is a first novel. It was like reading Hemingway for the first time. The writing was simply beautiful as the deepest chambers of a mind were unfolded for the reader so naturally.

I sincerely hope Mr. Gisclair has more in the works and I hope he realizes how good a writer he really is. I have been waiting for this book for years and finally someone with the talent to write it did so and I thank Mr. Gisclair for his willingness to again live with all those ghosts to tell their story; a brave thing indeed.

Singing to the Lions A Vietnam War Novel by Robert A Gisclair edition by Robert Gisclair Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Good story - but remember it is a novel. There is a lot of stretch regarding service in Vietnam. I was there as a Marine officer but don't think even the Army lacked as much leadership as this book portrays or was as loose in base camps allowing troops to run around outside the wire.. But if you like reading an interesting book this will do I found it insulting to those who served though to see where no one takes a replacement and provides the necessary leadership upfront to get him started. This book was void of any junior officer or SNCO leadership and was written like the unit was run without training or real objectives The ending strung out a bit and dropped interest But all in all is a novel and I would recommend it keeping that in mind
I can't say I'm an expert on the Vietnam War, but I've read many of the fiction / nonfiction stories about it. This is certainly one of the best written and detailed books about the subject. I'm only half finished with it, but it's already one of my favorites. Think " Matterhorn ", " 13th Valley ", "The Short Timers", " Fire Dream", "Valley of the Shadow"; great works all, and now another one to join the ranks. This is great writing AND a great story. If you read just one novel this year, this would be a perfect choice. I won't give away any of the details, but if you have a , try a sample - you'll buy the book. I can't say enough good things about this work. Mr. Gisclair, thanks for your service.
"Singing to the Lions" is a psychological thriller taking place during the Vietnam War. Recruit, Private White arrives at the field during a resupply of the company. He meets the lieutenant, who welcomes him to the platoon, and instructs him to join his fellow squad members in the wood line surrounding the open area, informing White, "Your squad is over there, find an open area and keep an eye out to your front." Pvt. White sat among other soldiers; none acknowledged him. In fact, it seemed like they purposely ignored the new soldier. They sat in groups of two and three, eating, reading, shooting the breeze and packing away supplies. White sat alone. So much for the introductions
ons, he thought!

When the order to march is given, Pvt. White found that he was still alone within the column of soldiers. He struggled with the weight of his pack, thirst, getting trapped by vines that shredded his fatigues and cut exposed skin on his arms and face, eating cold C-Rations during the lunch break, witnessing death after a short firefight that killed one of the replacements that accompanied him on the chopper. The night is haunting, and his first watch in the blackness filled with terror. All through the story, readers will follow the action and listen to his thoughts as he experiences everything during his first day in the bush.

The next day, a fellow soldier, Pierre Boudreaux, a Cajun from Louisiana, takes Pvt. White under his wing and helps to indoctrinate him to his new role for the next twelve months. The veterans in the group believe he shows promise and can be a trusted ally, thus, begins his learning.

The author, Robert Gisclair, excels at demonstrating the newness of every new experience for Pvt. White, and with Pierre at his side, also learns how to prepare himself mentally. Pierre takes him to Hue and introduces him to a special place, a whorehouse and later to a professor at the local university. White's mind begins to grow and starts looking at war and life differently.

His battalion enters into the A Shau Valley on different missions and each time, they lose fellow soldiers to ambushes and booby traps. The mention of A Shau in itself is enough to send foreboding thoughts into everybody's psyche. They also find that every time they engage the enemy, they are vastly outnumbered by a very determined NVA force that is intent on destroying the Americans.

If you were to read this book in the early 1970's, you'd surely think that this is a "Heavy" and "Deep" read. Not that you have to be a psychiatrist to understand it, the message is clear and readers will better understand why soldiers return from war differently. They've endured physical, mental and psychological abuses during that tour of duty that will haunt them forever. Thank you, Mr. Gisclair, for showing those innermost thoughts in written form! It adds a different dimension to an already great story. Highly recommended.

Thank you, sir, for your service and welcome home!
